Transit Visa » Belgium
Travelers transiting through Belgium without the intention of leaving the
international transit area do not need a visa.
However, nationals of most third countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA)
are required to hold a visa for a stay of up to three months in the Schengen
States.
Belgium, as a signatory state of the Schengen Agreement, has abolished internal
border controls, allowing for free travel throughout the entire Schengen zone
with a Schengen visa.
There are two types of transit visas under the Uniform Schengen visa group for
travelers passing through a Schengen member country to reach their final
destination. While many travelers are exempt from this visa, citizens of certain
countries must obtain it.
The Airport Transit Visa, categorized as "A," is for travelers who have a
layover and need to wait several hours for their next flight in the
international transit area of the designated airport. However, if their wait
extends overnight, they must remain in the transit area and cannot leave for
accommodations in the city.
If your final destination is a Schengen country, you will enter the Schengen
zone either at the first or last airport. Therefore, you will need an entry and
short-stay visa, categorized as "C," for the Schengen area. In such cases, a
transit visa is unnecessary as you will eventually leave the international
transit area of the airport and enter the Schengen zone.
