You won't need a visa to transit through Italy if you remain in the international transit area and have no intention of leaving it. However, if you plan to enter Italy, you may need to apply for a visa depending on your nationality and purpose of travel. Some travelers from certain countries need an Italy Transit Visa if they are passing through an Italian airport to travel to another destination.

The citizens of the following countries are required to obtain visas for transit through Italian airports (Airport Transit Visa – ATV) as per Art. 3, EC Reg. no. 810/2009:

• Afghanistan
• Bangladesh
• Eritrea
• Ethiopia
• Ghana
• Iran
• Iraq
• Democratic Rep. of Congo

• Nigeria
• Pakistan
• Somalia
• Sri Lanka
• Senegal
• Syria

The standardized Schengen visa will be valid for travelling to all the Schengen States. Thus, a special visa for visiting Italy will not be necessary.
