Standard single-entry transit visas are granted to individuals from other nations or stateless individuals who need to pass through Russian territory. This visa allows for a stay of up to 10 days (by road or rail) or up to 3 days (by air), provided they possess valid departure tickets from Russia and visas for entry into the subsequent destination or the passport for that country.

For foreign nationals traveling by car or heavy goods vehicle through Russia to their final destination, a transit visa is issued for the duration necessary to complete the journey via the shortest route, not exceeding 10 days. The visa's validity period is calculated based on an estimated average daily distance of 500 km.

Double-entry transit visas are valid for up to one month. If foreign nationals need to transit through Russia to a third country and then return through Russia more than a month later, they must apply for a single-entry transit visa and obtain a second transit visa from the Russian consulate in the country of their initial destination.

Foreign nationals flying over Russian territory without changing flights do not require a Transit Visa. Similarly, those flying with an international airline and changing flights in Russia, at the same airport for both outbound and inbound journeys, provided the airport has a transit area, do not need a Transit Visa if they have proper documentation for entering the destination country and a confirmed departure ticket within 24 hours of arrival in Russia.

To exit the transit area, a Transit Visa is necessary.

It's important to note that with the implementation of the Customs Union agreement between Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, flights between these countries are considered domestic. Therefore, passengers traveling to Belarus or Kazakhstan with a layover in Russia must obtain a Transit Visa for Russia.
